What is difference between culpable and guilty , how to learn the hairline difference in the synonyms?

Off the top of my head here,I'd say that the culpable defendant would be basically held guilty in most peoples'minds.But it simply cannot be proved.The ability,motive,opportunity,etc.The culpable culprit.The guilty defendant,on the other hand, has this and more working against him.There is substantial proof against him,rendering him guilty,not only in public opinion,but also under the law.Regards,BK
